You are here: Home -> Mobiles -> Informations -> SMS -> In Action Deaf Benefit Greatly from SMS Deaf Today reports A joint research project between Australia's Bond and Griffith universities has found the deaf community is a major beneficiary of the mobile text-messaging craze. In Australia, more than 50 percent of the general population sends at least one text message a day. The result is a nearly universal, text-based communications medium that connects the deaf to the hearing world. By using text messaging, deaf mobile users can order a pizza, invite friends for a beer or even just have a chat. Teenagers in particular are making the most out of the popularity of text messaging. It's great for younger people because their group of friends is extended to their peer group, and not just other deaf people. In India, Airtel is offering a special plan to Deaf and Dumb people. This plan which is referred as Airtel Confidence Plan-99 offers free SMS messaging within India. It charges Rs.99 as monthly rental. You cant make or receive calls on this sim card according to Airtel. We have got reports that even calls work on this plan. To apply for this connection, the guardian/doctor of the Deaf and Dumb person must submit the handicapped certificate issued by the Government of India. Recently we heard that, this plan is being misused by many for commercial purposes as National SMS within India is completely free in this plan. Airtel is planning to regulate this plan by limiting the number of free SMS. Anyway, thanks Airtel for providing such a good service for this handicapped people. Please inquire with your local Airtel Customer Care for this plan. |
