Warning Signs Of A Dangerous Relationship
- Jealously and possessiveness are not signs of a healthy relationship.
Mutual caring and respect are far better ways of showing affection.
- Drugs and alcohol are never an excuse for inexcusable behavior. A
boyfriend/girlfriend who has a problem with drinking or drugs may be more
likely to become abusive.
- Bullying and intimidation have no place in a healthy relationship. If you
feel scared or pressured, it is probably time to reevaluate.
- Be careful not to stereotype an abusive personality. Just because your
boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't fit with your image of what an abusive person
is like, if their behavior is frightening you in any way, you need to listen
to you gut and take a step back.
- People change and sometimes relationships need to change with them. Just
because a relationship started out on a positive note, if it no longer makes
you happy there is no reason you can't end it.
- How often do you make compromises for your boyfriend or girlfriend? If he
or she is isolating you from your friends, family, or simply the things you
like to do, it could be a signal that you need to slow things down.
- Being embarrassed or criticized in public or in private is not acceptable
behavior. Verbal abuse can be just as hurtful as any other kind and needs to
be addressed.
- This goes without saying, but any attempt to hurt or scare you physically
is a loud and clear signal that you are in a volatile and potentially
dangerous situation.
- Games are not fun when they mess with your mind and your feelings. If you
feel like you are being manipulated it may be cause for concern.
- Last but not least, whatever you do, if you suspect at all that you may be
involved in a situation that is making you uncomfortable and you can not
handle on your own, talk to a parent, counselor or other trusted adult. You
do not have to accept abusive behavior from anyone and there is lots of help
out there for you.
